Share the love :)

Broccoli casserole is a delicious and comforting dish made with broccoli florets, a creamy sauce, cheese, and often topped with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers. It’s a popular side dish at many family gatherings and holiday meals.

Broccoli is often referred to as a “superfood” due to its numerous health benefits. Here are some of the key advantages of including broccoli in your diet:

  • Nutrient-Rich: Broccoli is packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, potassium, and calcium.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Broccoli contains antioxidants like sulforaphane, which can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. These antioxidants may also play a role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Cancer Prevention: Some studies suggest that the compounds in broccoli, including sulforaphane, may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
  • Heart Health: Broccoli is low in cholesterol and saturated fats. Its fiber content can help lower cholesterol levels, and its potassium content can help regulate blood pressure.
  • Digestive Health: The fiber in broccoli aids in digestion and can help prevent constipation. It also supports a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Bone Health: Broccoli is a good source of vitamin K and calcium, both of which are important for maintaining strong and healthy bones.
  • Eye Health: The vitamin A and other antioxidants in broccoli are beneficial for eye health and can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
  • Weight Management: Broccoli is low in calories but high in fiber, making it a filling and nutritious food choice for those looking to manage their weight.
  • Immune Support: Vitamin C in broccoli boosts the immune system and helps the body fight off infections.
  • Skin Health: The antioxidants in broccoli may contribute to healthy, radiant skin by protecting it from damage caused by UV rays and pollution.
  • Detoxification: Some compounds in broccoli, such as glucosinolates, are thought to support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Broccoli contains anti-inflammatory compounds that may help reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to various chronic diseases.

Broccoli casserole, while delicious and comforting, may not offer as many health benefits as plain broccoli due to the additional ingredients like cheese and mayonnaise. However, it still provides some nutritional value, and the benefits can vary depending on the specific recipe and ingredients used.

Broccoli casserole is a delicious and comforting dish made with broccoli florets, a creamy sauce, cheese, and often topped with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers.

  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets (or you can use frozen broccoli)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped onions (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. If you're using fresh broccoli, blanch it by placing the florets in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then immediately transferring them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain and set aside. If you're using frozen broccoli, thaw and drain it.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped onions (if using), garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are combined.
  4. Add the blanched or thawed broccoli florets to the mixture and toss to coat them evenly.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the breadcrumbs or crushed crackers with the melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cheese layer.
  7. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown, and the casserole is bubbling.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
